Caffe Sicilia has swung open its doors on Crown Street, Surry Hills. The smart-looking new arrival is co-owned by Phillip Visalli and Italian restaurateur Sacha Del Bono, who owns restaurants in Sicily. "I love this area," Del Bono tells Short Black. "It's busy but not too smart. It reminds me of Italy."Across the road is the closed Tabou restaurant (Short Black, March 22). Its perilous financial position has emerged after the company that operated the Surry Hills restaurant, T Restaurant Pty Ltd, was placed into voluntary liquidation. Staff at the modest restaurant are owed just shy of $100,000. A long list of unsecured creditors are in the red for about $200,000. It proved a costly investment for barrister Rod McPherson, who fell in love with Tabou as a diner and bought the place. He and co-owner Julie McPherson are on the books as being owed $1.2 million. Liquidator Rod Sutherland says he's valuing plant and equipment and some furniture to see what can be retrieved for creditors. Tabou may be closed but the Crown Street strip shows no sign of slowing up.
